What's your favorite Indian Buffet restaurant in the Raleigh area? I
used to love India Garden at Cary Towne Center, but ate there a few
months ago and it was lousy.

Thanks Susan. Out of these four, whose lunch buffet has the largest
number of items? I've read that Udupi's buffet is small and is
predominantly South Indian (vegetarian); love me some dosas, but I
prefer North Indian.

I really don't know what the heck happened to India Garden. The
buffet, I guess, was never huge. But the quality of the food seemed to
have gone downhill when I was there last. People still seem to rave
about it on sites like triangle.citysearch.com; maybe their entrees
are still good? Also have seen people fighting over a series of
management changes at Suchi.

For anyone wondering, Azitra over by Brier Creek doesn't even have a
buffet--seems to have gotten good reviews though.

Just ate at Azitra yesterday. The food there is excellent, very high
quality. But, the average lunch entree (as you suggest, they do not
have a buffet) is $10-$11.

If you eat at Azitra too many times, you won't be able to eat at (I
should say "stomach") the food on these buffets in this thread, cause
the quality just isn't there ....

That's probably true with food on nearly any buffet.

There's a fabulous Chinese restaurant in Raleigh called Red Palace.
The buffet food is passable, but the entrees are fantastic. Helped
that I have a Chinese friend who knows what dishes are best to order.

Still, of the Indian buffets that are around, I'd like to know which
ones people here consider the best.

I don't know about largest number of items - I would say that I think Saffron is the best
(although it's also about a dollar more expensive than the others, iirc). I've only been
to Bombay Grille once with some work colleagues who like it better than the other
alternatives.

Sorry - like I said I haven't actually been out for Indian recently. I need to remedy that!

Thanks again. I had no idea Saffron was vegetarian-only. Udipi I knew
about. Not sure my wife would like the vegetarian-only dishes. I like
south indian, but am a carnivore for sure. Should have said I was
looking for a North Indian buffet.

Tried Saffron today and enjoyed it. The buffet wasn't enormous, but it
had both vegetarian and meat dishes (chicken and goat). Can't say it's
the best Indian food I've ever had, but it was quite good. It's a bit
of a drive for me, but well worth it. Prices were $11 for the lunch
buffet on a Saturday; $9 for the lunch buffet Monday through Friday.
And the bring fresh nan to your table.

The restaurant was full of people of Indian descent, so I knew I was
in for some good eating; unless the owner simply had an enormous
family. :-)

Thanks for the recommendations.

I didn't know Udupi had a buffet! <drooling>

There were whispers in the wind--must have been a year ago--that
India Garden was having a hard time with mall management--rents
going up, I.G. being encouraged to find a new location. That might
well affect their quality.

Saffron and Udipi are the best Indian restaurants among the four listed
in my opinion. Of course, if you gotta have meat, they won't be as high
on your list. I think Udipi's buffet is only at lunch; don't recall if
Saffron has a dinner buffet. Udipi is probably the best in the bunch in
getting the quality of the buffet close to the restaurant's ala carte
menu; Saffron is a very very close second. But no buffet will ever
measure up to made-to-order entrees.

Royal India on Capital Blvd in Tarrymore Square has a lunch buffet that
is good.

Taj Mahal on Capital Blvd in Mini City had a dinner buffet when I
visited a couple of times several months back, but each time I was
there there were not enough patrons to turn over the items quickly, and
I ended up eating off the menu because the buffet did not look
appetizing. Their ala carte menu is excellent, though. Service has been
highly variable. I don't know if they still have the dinner buffet, or
whether they have a lunch buffet (too far afield for me to investigate
and get back to work in time).

Spice and Curry on 55&54 (near pizza hot, not Big Lots) has good
variety and I've never been turned off by the quality.

My friends and I regularly dine at Udupi. I can't imagine how this
restaurant is able to sustain such
variety in its offerings. The desserts are wonderful, especially the
one that's like a soup made with
very, very thin noodles.
